Blankenburg

Blankenburg is located in scenic surroundings in a valley known as the "Schlotheimer Grabenbruch", on the edge of the "Großes und Kleines Hornholz" nature reserve.

The village was first mentioned in a document in 1143 and can look back on a long and eventful past. Storms, diseases and wars have left their mark.

At the end of the Second World War, first the US army arrived in 1945, later the Soviet army. After the GDR was founded, the village developed like many others. There was a village shop, a restaurant, a kindergarten and crèche and a post office. The school, opened in 1875, was closed in 1959.

The inhabitants worked in local businesses and institutions, but mainly in agriculture. Until the mid-1950s, there were many individual farmers who later worked together in agricultural production cooperatives. In the early 1970s, some residents also found work in the newly built NVA (National People's Army) facility.

The fall of communism in 1989 also brought major changes to Blankenburg. Citizens became more mobile, there was no longer a need for the local public facilities, which gradually closed. The army building was no longer needed after it was taken over by the Bundeswehr. It was first used as a home for asylum seekers and later partially demolished.

Blankenburg was one of the founding communities of the Bad Tennstedt administrative community back in 1991. In March 2011, Blankenburg, together with the neighboring communities of Kirchheilingen, Sundhausen and Tottleben, founded the "Stiftung Landleben" (Rural Life Foundation). Together, they are working on concepts with the aim of making life in our rural region more attractive for all residents and counteracting demographic change. This includes offering attractive services and healthcare, but also improving leisure facilities and a well-developed and signposted network of cycling and hiking trails for residents and visitors.

Blankenburg is now a modern residential village with smart houses, modern street lighting, new roads and sidewalks and fast internet.

The small reservoir on the eastern edge of the village, located directly on the country road and formerly built as an irrigation basin, is now a fishing pond and hiking destination. A simple little farm church in an ensemble with a weeping ash tree and the one-class village school from 1875 as well as the historic community bakery in the center of the village are listed buildings. The VIA ROMEA, a pilgrimage route along which Abbot Albert von Stade went to Rome in 1236, runs right along here.

Clubs and organizations, such as the volunteer fire department, fire department association, bakery friends, etc., shape social and cultural life in the village and cultivate tradition and customs.
