Bleicherode

The town of Bleicherode, first mentioned in a document in 1130, nestles against the Bleicherode Mountains. The silence of Bleicherode and the tranquility of the adjacent forests welcome those seeking recreation. Boldly the heights rise from the valleys of the rivers Wipper and Bode. From the heights of the cliffs one has unique distant views of the Harz Mountains, Hainleite, Kyffhäuser, Ohm Mountains and Dün. The region invites hikers and cyclists to varied nature experiences.

The people of Bleicherode are also affectionately called snail stallions. This nickname goes back to the Thirty Years' War, when the town was attacked and plundered. In times of need, the people of Bleicherode helped themselves by breeding snails, which they sold in Leipzig. But a merchant had a mishap, because on the way the snails woke up from their hibernation and so the whole wagonload of snails was lost.

The region is characterized by its mining history: In 1888, a potash deposit was discovered in the Bleicherode area, in 1899 the extraction of potash salts began and the potash industry shaped the town for more than 100 years. The annual miners' festival commemorates this economic tradition.

One of the most beautiful half-timbered buildings in the town is the Old Chancellery from the 17th century. It was the seat of the town mayor and the count's administration. Since 1725 there was also a synagogue here. The ensemble, which has been renovated through civic engagement, is now used for exhibitions and other events.

Numerous events also take place in Bleicherode's house of culture, which was opened as early as 1904 by the former potash mining society. To this day, it is a house of clubs and cultural center - not only for the carnival, which is celebrated in Bleicherode. There is also a movie theater in the small town to this day. The municipal baths also have historic charm; since 1930, guests have been able to refresh themselves here in the summer.

One of the most famous sons of the town is August Petermann, who was born in Bleicherode in 1822 and was one of the most important geographers and cartographers of his time.

Today's rural municipality of Bleicherode consists of the 14 villages Bleicherode, Elende, Etzelsrode, Friedrichsthal, Hainrode, Kleinbodungen, Kraja, Mörbach, Nohra, Obergebra, Wernrode, Wipperdorf, Wolkramshausen and Wollersleben.
