Bothenheilingen is located about twelve kilometers east of the county seat Mulhouse. The place belongs to the group of once nine Heilingen-Locations around the Heilinger Heights on the northwestern edge of the Thuringian Basin.

Bothenheilingen is found in archival documents as early as 800 as Budenheilingen. The village is mentioned for the first time in 1142 in a donation. In the 14th century, the village of Bothenheilingen belonged to the Lords of Ebeleben, who held it as a fief from the Landgrave of Thuringia.

A relic of the historical development of the village Bothenheilingen is the ManorThe manor is also called "Freigut". In the long history of its existence, the manor has had changing owners and the building structure has always undergone changes according to the eras. This essentially contributed to the fact that this historical object was preserved in its complexity over many years. Today it stands as one of the oldest historical buildings in the village.
