Büchner's house
Büchner's house
The Büchner House is located behind the facades of Meiningen's city center at Georgstraße 20 and can be reached from the pedestrian zone. A sign points the way through a hallway to the magnificent late Renaissance house, which is also the oldest surviving half-timbered building in Meiningen, dating back to 1596.
The colorful, three-storey residential building expresses the prosperity of the owner and the Meiningen bourgeoisie at the turn of the 16th and 17th centuries. While large parts of the old town were destroyed in the devastating town fire of 1874, Büchner's house only narrowly escaped destruction.
Finally, at the beginning of the 20th century, the house, farm building and courtyard were completely renovated due to the poor condition of the building that had developed over the years. Further restoration work was carried out in 1974 and 2001. The house consists of a stone first floor and two projecting half-timbered upper floors to create more space in the rooms. The façade is richly decorated with St. Andrew's crosses, painted sliding shutters and carved corner posts. Above this is the attic with a high gable, weather vane and gargoyles on the gutter. There is a historic running fountain in the rear courtyard.
