It is said to have been built by Landgrave Balthasar around 1392 as a protective castle against the predatory raids of the Eichsfeld and Mühlhäuser. As the cornerstone of a land defense system, it secured the north-western border of the Landgraviate of Thuringia against the possessions of the Archbishops of Mainz.
