Allstedt Castle and Palace Museum
Allstedt Castle and Palace Museum
The Allstedt Castle and Palace Museum is permanently closed until probably summer 2025 due to extensive conversion and renovation work!
The imposing silhouette of the Allstedt castle and palace complex rises above the southern Harz mountains. With its unique history of construction and use and as the authentic place of activity of the reformer Thomas Müntzer, it is a place of outstanding importance. An important imperial palace was located here from 935 to 1200. In 1524, the reformer Thomas Müntzer held his famous princely sermon in the Hofstube. The main attraction of the complex, some of whose defensive facilities are still in working order, is the late Gothic castle kitchen with one of the largest chimney stacks in European castle construction. In the 18th century, Goethe stayed at Allstedt Castle and wrote parts of "Iphigenia" here, as can be seen in the Goethe exhibition at the castle museum. The museum is housed in the main castle. Unique historical rooms provide the setting for cultural events, hearty knights' feasts, weddings and other celebrations. The extensive collection of cast iron art from Mägdesprung/Harz is also worth seeing.
