Burgau
Burgau
Burgau is a district of Jena and is located south of the city center and west of the federal highway 88 and the Saale and west of the old town of Lobeda. The first documentary mention of the place in the Middle Saale Valley dates back to the year 1257.
Worth seeing in the village is the Binderburg, which was built from 1906-1912 by Prof. Adolf Binder on the remains of the old Burgau Castle. The present private house is located in the immediate vicinity of the Old Saale Bridge Jena-Burgau. The bridge is a 142.4 meter long stone arch bridge built in 1534 and connects Burgau with Lobeda. Next to the bridge is the Saale power plant Burgau. The hydroelectric power plant was built at the beginning of the 20th century on the site of the Old Mill and still produces electricity today.
Burgau is a good starting point for trips to the city center of Jena, after Lobeda or in the landscape protection and recreation areas Jena forest, Leutra Valley and Cospoth as well as in the Core mountains and Wöllmisse.
