Surrounded by beautiful countryside and a rich cultural heritage, the Burgenland district has a lot to offer not only to its 179,000 inhabitants. It is also a popular destination for tourists. The painter Max Klinger called the climatically spoiled region in the south of Saxony-Anhalt the "Tuscany of the North" for good reason.

Burgenlandkreis is also one of the strongest economic districts in the region. In addition to tourism, its economic strength is based on the food industry, the logistics sector, mechanical engineering and metal processing, healthcare and mining. The traditions of mining go back a long way and people live with and from coal. This is why mining is a strong branch of industry in our region. It is of great economic and social importance to the people of the Burgenland district. The structural change in the Central German lignite mining area is therefore one of the greatest challenges in economic policy since reunification.

Agriculture and the Saale-Unstrut-Triasland Nature Park also play an important role in shaping our cultural landscape. More than 390 agricultural businesses operate in the district, with very different sizes and legal forms. They farm between 50 and 4,000 hectares, ranging from small family businesses to larger farms.

The Burgenland district also offers a wide range of leisure activities with the attractive connection between the scenic valleys of the Saale, Unstrut and Weißer Elster rivers, the Saale-Unstrut-Triasland Nature Park and the cultural and art-historical sights.

On the one hand, there is the valuable cultural and natural landscape shaped by the High Middle Ages. It is largely characterized by viticulture, which has been practiced here for 1000 years. New and extended cycling and hiking trails as well as boat tours invite the whole family to get to know the Burgenland district - which is by no means just a wine and castle region - in an active way. For example, you can cycle along the Saale-Unstrut-Elster Cycle Eight along the lignite road. Why not take a refreshment break at the Mondsee lake in Hohenmölsen or the lake in Kretzschau, which are now important recreational destinations for the people of the Burgenland district after lignite mining. Visit the Nebra Ark and the solar observatory in Goseck or the buildings on the Romanesque Road, including Naumburg Cathedral, Schönburg Castle, Moritzburg Castle in Zeitz and Goseck Castle.
