Once the moat around Weimar's city palace, today one of the most important public squares in Weimar: Burgplatz connects the palace, located on the park on the Ilm River, and the adjacent Bastille with the Duchess Anna Amalia Library, the modern study center and Frau von Stein's house. The current design was made in the 19th century, after a fire in 1834 burned down many residential buildings. In house No. 1 Johann Wolfgang von Goethe moved into his first own apartment in Weimar in 1776, until then he had resided as a guest in the Saxon Court on Herderplatz.
