Ebersburg castle ruins near Poppenhausen (Wasserkuppe)
The ruins of Ebersburg Castle sit enthroned on the Ebersberg at an altitude of 700 m. It is assumed that the Ebersburg was built around the year 1200 by the noble Ebersberg family. From 1396, the castle was rebuilt and extended after being destroyed. As it never had its own well, it was rather unsuitable as a permanent residence and was finally abandoned in the 16th century.
The attempt to use it again after the Thirty Years' War by building a half-timbered house also failed after a few years. In the 19th century, the ruins were located in the former rural district of Weyhers, which belonged to the Kingdom of Bavaria. During this time, one of the towers was converted into an observation tower and the castle was restored to its original state.
Today it is owned by the state of Hesse. It is a protected cultural monument. Those interested have the opportunity to visit and climb the castle ruins from the inside. The key required for this can be obtained for a deposit from Ferienhof Weichlein (Schafhof 1, 36157 Ebersburg). The deposit is € 10.00 and € 0.50 per person for the maintenance of the castle ruins.
