Liebenstein castle ruins
Numerous sagas and legends surround the ruins of Liebenstein Castle in the Ilm district. There are tales of a walled-in child and of enchanted walls. The castle was built by the Counts of Schwarzburg, who guarded the trade route up to the passes of the Thuringian Forest from there. The ruins of Liebenstein Castle, above the village of the same name, are characterized by their strikingly compact shape and rounded corners. Today, the castle is freely accessible and is used for various events.
