The 33-metre-high monument, created by architect Wilhelm Kreis, was ceremonially inaugurated on May 20, 1902. The powerful columns, which symbolize the close union of the German tribes, are held together by a high tambour and surmounted by a mighty helmet. The motto Honor, Freedom, Fatherland carved into the architrave stands for the guiding principle of the academic youth during the anti-Napoleonic wars and the war of 1870/71. The monument is dedicated to all those who stood up for the unity and freedom of Germany in the 19th century, in particular the fraternity members who died during this period. A permanent exhibition inside the memorial provides an overview of the liberal and democratic aims of the fraternity movement, the history of the fraternity and the fraternity memorial.
