Grand Duke Carl August is enthroned above the Square of Democracy in front of the Princely House at the necessary height distance from the common people. The foundation stone was laid on his 100th birthday, but it was not unveiled until 18 years later. The bronze equestrian statue by Adolf von Donndorf shows the prince in a general's uniform with a laurel wreath, heroizing him in the style of antiquity. Carl August consistently promoted civic culture and science, thus laying the foundations for Weimar's cosmopolitan development.
