There has been a small, verifiable Christian community in Oberhof since the founding of the „Herberge auff'm Schwarzwald“, the Oberer Hof, by the Order of St. John in Weißensee, which was looked after by the pastor of Crawinkel after the Reformation. From 1714, it was administered by the second parish priest of Zella-St. Blasii, who was also the parish priest of Oberhof. At this time, this small, growing parish of just over seven houses already had its own teacher (you have to let that melt in your mouth today!). When the local priest was unable to come, he regularly held services in the Geleitshaus and, from 1704, in the school and prayer house that still stands today. But then the prayer room on the upper floor became too small and the congregation built a small church in 1783.

When this small community developed into a fashionable high-altitude health resort in the 19th century due to the rise of winter sports, the plan to build a larger, more representative church emerged as early as 1937. This was prevented by the Second World War. In 1950, the parish council decided to build a new church. Regional Bishop Dr. D. Moritz Mitzenheim was involved and negotiations with the state authorities began. Commitments were made, but withdrawn again due to the escalating situation before June 17, 1953. There was even a recorded argument between Otto Grotewohl and Walter Ulbricht about the church building in Oberhof, in which Otto Grotewohl spoke out in favor of the construction and Walter Ulbricht vehemently against it. Despite these disputes and the constantly changing construction situation, the foundation stone was laid on July 26, 1953 and the consecration was celebrated on November 17, 1957.

The Christuskirche church in Oberhof still stands today as a symbol of trust in God, even though its then exclusive location on the highest hill in Oberhof has since been repeatedly walled in by rows of houses.
