Closewitz is located on the Ilm-Saale plateau north of the town of Jena. Conveniently located between the B7, B88 and A4, the city center is approx. 7.5 km away. Despite this proximity, the rural character of the village and the region has been preserved. Around 200 meters of elevation and wooded areas create a spatial boundary to Jena on the floor of the Saale valley.

Closewitz is known beyond the country's borders for its unique occurrence of the Winterlingsa small plant species from the buttercup family. When the small plants with their yellow flowers bloom on almost five hectares in February/March, the extensive carpet of flowers in the Rautal a popular and often photographed excursion destination east of the village.

In a westerly direction and shortly before entering the village, there is a nature reserve in the forest area: the Closewitz Natural History Grove. The grove has paved and marked paths as well as numerous information boards along a specially marked nature trail. The grove borders directly on the Windknollen nature reserve. In 1806, Napoleon's troops fought one of the decisive battles against the Prussians in this area. This historic moment is commemorated by the Napoleon stonewhich stands at the highest point and offers a sweeping view over the Saale valley.

The 91 km long quality hiking trail Hall horizontal leads through the region around Closewitz and offers a varied hiking experience with fantastic views.
