Coudrayhaus Bad Berka

A hands-on museum with aha experiences south of Weimar

Master builder Clemens Wenzeslaus Coudray designed this building on behalf of Grand Duke Carl August as a bathing and social house for Berka's spa guests.

The ceremonial opening took place on June 24, 1825 in the presence of the Weimar court. The master builder Coudray received much praise for his "well-done building" in classical forms.

From then on, the house was the cultural and social center of Berka's spa life. In addition to catering, balls, concerts, theater performances and other events were held.

After the Second World War, the house belonged to the Volksheilbad, and since 1994 it has once again belonged to the town of Bad Berka. Today, the Coudray House is a cultural center of the town with many events and exhibitions.

Permanent exhibition: "BERKAER BATH HISTORIES"

The modern permanent exhibition in the Coudrayhaus takes visitors on an entertaining journey through 200 years of spa and healthcare development in Bad Berka. Among other things, the beginnings as a bathhouse and its conversion into a military hospital or bakery school are shown.

In the historic "Badegesellschaftshaus" on the northern edge of the spa gardens, the essence of what makes Berka what it is is presented in a fresh new look. A timeline provides visitors with a chronological overview of events since 1807 in words and pictures. You can rummage through drawers to your heart's content, reach for the earpiece, browse through photo albums and scroll through old films. From the discovery of the steel spring to the beginnings of tuberculosis treatment in the Sophienheilstätte and the high-tech medicine of our time, there is a mixture of educational and entertaining information.

In this hands-on museum, aha-experiences are guaranteed for both Berka residents and guests!
