Cyriak's ruins Dornburg-Camburg
The Romanesque ruins of St. Cyriac's Church are hidden along a historic forest path in the Stöben Forest about 1.5 km from Camburg in the direction of Großheringen. The basilica was built around the turn of the first millennium. The remains of the walls extend impressively over a large area.
Many legends and myths surround this basilica, which was built between 900 and 1,000 AD and was apparently founded by a local noblewoman. The first documentary mention dates back to 1121 as the church of “Stubi”. When the last priest left the church in 1539, it fell into disrepair and provided building materials for the surrounding villages.
Remains of walls and preserved Romanesque arches form an atmospheric backdrop in the middle of the forest, which is particularly inviting for events in the summer months.
A beautiful tradition is the festive service held in this historic building every July. With prayer, devotion and song, this place is returned to its original purpose. Around the restored altar, the sound of trumpets, choir singing and children's voices fill this romantic place with its very own atmosphere.
The ruins have been extensively secured and restored. It can be visited at any time.
