Dankmarshausen was first mentioned in a document in 1302. According to the settlement structure, the village is a clustered village and is located on the edge of the Seulingswald forest and the Richelsdorfer Gebirge mountains. The village is located on the left western high bank of the Werra. The highest point in the district is the Hornungskuppe (444 m). The "Rhäden" nature reserve extends to the north. This former moorland area of the Rhäden has been converted back into a valuable nature reserve and offers visitors active recreation by bike or on foot. Witnesses to the history of Dankmarshausen are on display in the Heimatstube and can be viewed by appointment. Dankmarshausen is part of the municipality of Werra-Suhl-Tal.
