The Lower Gate was built on the north side of Münnerstadt as early as the 13th century and was documented in 1315 as the „nyder tore“.

In its final form, however, it probably dates back to the 18th century. It is depicted in an earlier form on a prince-bishop's hunting map from 1720, so it must have been demolished after this date and rebuilt in a more modest form.

The new construction made it different from the other three Münnerstadt town gates, all of which were built in the 13th and 14th centuries and some of which were extended during the Renaissance.

In the end, the gate had four storeys with rectangular windows. The passageway had round-arched gate openings. The roof had half hips. The entrance to the gate was on the east side at first floor level.

The road via Burglauer to Bad Neustadt originally led through the Dicken Turm and was only later routed through the Untere Tor.

In April 1945, the Lower Gate was blown up by US soldiers at lunchtime because it was an obstacle to the passage of tanks.
