GDR border station museum

1.3 km behind the Bavarian border is the former GDR border station Probstzella. It was a GDR border station between 1949 and 1990. The exhibition set up there provides information about the freedom to leave the country, which was denied in the GDR, about the harassing control regime at the border, and about the nature of the GDR's western border as the wall of a prison state. It shows inner views of power and the powerlessness of the ruled. It tells of failed and successful escape attempts via the Probstzella border station. It illustrates the history of the station from 1945 to 1990. Original exhibits, documents and photos as well as film and audio excerpts from the archives of the perpetrators can be seen. On the upper floor of the museum, the visitor receives information about the station and local history as well as information about the House of the People and the Green Belt.

The Hopfsberg border tower houses the exhibition "Perpetrators, Victims, Fellow Travellers", which can be reached on foot from the station. The GDR border station museum in Probstzella was created in the fall of 2010. The exhibition was commissioned by the Jena History Workshop and designed by the book author and filmmaker Roman Grafe (including "Die Grenze durch Deutschland", Siedler 2002). Pupils and teachers of the Heinrich-Böll-Gymnasium Saalfeld as well as citizens from Probstzella and Ludwigsstadt and many others helped. The Foundation for the Reappraisal of the SED Dictatorship and the Sparkassen-Kulturstiftung Hessen-Thüringen provided financial support for the exhibition. The museum is supported by voluntary work and the municipality of Probstzella, entrance fees and donations.
