Monument to the March Fallen
Monument to the March Fallen
With his architectural work Walter Gropius belongs to the pioneers of new building in the twenties. In the Historical Cemetery there is a reconstruction of the monument to the March Fallen in Weimar, designed by him in 1922 to honor the victims of the Kapp Putsch. The Nazis destroyed it in 1936, and a replica was erected in 1946. The abstract monument made of concrete, shows a "lightning bolt from the bottom of the grave as an emblem of the living spirit" (Gropius). The lightning bolt is followed by the seven grave slabs of the victims.
