"Steinach styluses are the best!" This was written on the boxes in which around 30 billion of these slender writing instruments, made from the local slate, were sent all over the world. The slate-roofed houses still give the landscape its special character today. The German Slate Museum, which is probably unique in its kind, was created to keep the 400-year history of slate production alive. In addition to a comprehensive presentation of the history of the slate industry, the museum also includes slate production, the roofing trade, the production of roofing slate and water whetstones, the processing and artistic use of slate, German slate deposits, slate painting, the geology of the region and interesting facts about the Steinach teacher, geologist and local historian Max Volk.
