The medieval pilgrimage chapel of St. Mary was first mentioned in 874. In the 12th century, a new church was built in place of an older one or the existing building was altered.

The choir, tower and the nave, which was last remodeled in Baroque style in 1756, are each covered with simple saddleback roofs with paw crosses on the gables.

When the Gothic choir was destroyed by an air mine in 1945, a large Gothic tracery window was lost, as were the cornices, a sacrament house, the altar with consecration crosses, a late Gothic shrine to the Virgin Mary, the Baroque pulpit altar and the nave fixtures. They could not be replaced during the emergency renovation in 1954 due to a lack of funds. The chancel is now the parish hall. The Gothic baptismal font has no base; the preserved decoration of applied tracery is a reminder of the once rich furnishings.
