The church was built around 1580 in the village of "villa regia Salvelt", which was first mentioned in a document in 1199. It forms the center of the round village of Saalfeld, a district of Mühlhausen. The church has a rich baroque interior and was renovated in 2005. The roof of the nave was renewed.

The church is Protestant and is under the care of the Mühlhausen church district. Church services are held here regularly.

Its patron saint is St. Nicholas of Myra.
