Sundremda village church
Sundremda village church
The listed Protestant village church of Sundremda is located in the Sundremda district of the town of Rudolstadt in the district of Saalfeld-Rudolstadt in Thuringia. A predecessor church was first mentioned in 1387. In 1531, a monk in Erfurt requested its reconstruction. The preserved Romanesque east tower once belonged to a monastery, as can be seen from the structural elements on its first floor. Unique in our area are the openings on all four sides in the two upper floors of the tower. The neat workmanship of the masonry, which was built from local stone, is striking. The sandstone comes from the surrounding area. Experts must have worked here.
A special feature: a stone head on the north side looks out at us from the round arch of the lower group of windows. Was the stonemason joking or is this head a reference to a fatal building accident? The nave was extended or renovated in 1740. It can be seen here that the stones used were not as well hewn as those in the tower.
The foundation stone of the new church was laid on April 12, 1740. The construction price amounted to 975 thalers. The interior of the church was extensively restored and renovated in 2012. The Baroque-style altar and pulpit date back to the 18th century. The organ from 1865 is the work of Johann Menger from Paulinzella. The large bell was cast in 1593 with the following inscription: +IN SONTEM HANG ICH+MEINEN KLANG GEB ICH+ ALLE CHRISTEN RUF ICH+MELCHIOR MÖRINCK GOSS MICH+1593
Its diameter is 106 cm and it still has a chime that has to be rung. The small bells were melted down during the First World War.
