There was once a castle chapel in Scherbda, which probably dates back to the 15th century. The present church was built on its foundations in 1761. However, the baptismal font from 1566 is still very well preserved.
The original interior of the church dates back to the 18th century. The artistically painted barrel ceiling is particularly noteworthy. The depiction shows the Ascension of Christ as well as John on Patmos and Matthew with an angel. Two galleries surround the interior of the church. The pulpit is left free. Above the baptismal font hangs a valuable chandelier, richly decorated with fruit and a dove in the middle.
Shortly before the end of the GDR, considerable sponge infestation of the building fabric was discovered. The community showed exemplary commitment and the restoration work was completed before reunification. The paintings and the entire paintwork were restored by 2014. The church's Eifert organ from the late 19th century has 8 stops and was last renovated in 2000 with the help of a bequest.
The church's original bell from 1796 was melted down during the First World War and replaced by another in 1926. Another one from 1796 survived the war and still hangs in the tower today.
