Thanks to its uniquely preserved medieval townscape with more than 600 colorful half-timbered houses from different eras as well as its monuments and sights, Duderstadt, which is over 1000 years old, is one of the most beautiful half-timbered towns in Germany.

The gently curving streets of the old town follow the oval of the city wall, surrounded by the greenery of the extensive ramparts, which invite you to take a stroll. The unique silhouette of Duderstadt, characterized by the imposing towers of St. Cyriacus Basilica and St. Servatius Church, the twisted helmet of the Westerturm tower, the town hall crowned by three oriel towers and the towers of the Liebfrauenkirche church, can be seen from afar.

The town hall, once built as a "Kophus" (department store), served the merchants as a marketplace and was the center of civic life. Today it is a tourist and cultural center and, above all, an attractive exhibition and experience venue. Over a total of nine exhibition levels, a media redesign enables visitors to embark on an exciting journey back in time to the old Duderstadt. Deep within the walls of this impressive building is the torture chamber, a relic from days long past. Here, the "riffraff" was subjected to the "embarrassing question" in order to establish the truth. From the highest tower of the town hall, the visitor has a fantastic view over the Duderstadt roofscape, which covers the old town like a red carpet. From the west tower of the town hall the "Anreischke" greets the guests and citizens of the town - daily at 09:00, 11:00, 13:00, 15:00, 17:00 and 19:00 - with a chime.

Duderstadt's landmark is the Westerturm tower from 1424, the only surviving town tower of the medieval town fortifications, which originally consisted of a wall, rampart and ramparts. In authentic surroundings, in the "Westerturm ensemble" with the oldest section of the Duderstadt town wall, a reconstructed battlements and the Georgsturm, the medieval town defenses can be experienced up close in the exhibition "Stadtluft macht frei".

The ecological facets of the city were further enhanced by the Lower Saxony State Garden Show in 1994. All the more reason for the famous nature and animal filmmaker Heinz Sielmann and his wife Inge to set up their large nature experience center and foundation headquarters on the former Herbigshagen estate. The Eichsfeld Borderland Museum - a decentralized project of Expo 2000 and a recognized and award-winning memorial site - at the former Duderstadt-Worbis border crossing provides information about the history of German division. Duderstadt's convenient location in the unique cultural landscape of the Eichsfeld, in the middle of popular German vacation regions such as the Harz Mountains, the Thuringian Forest, the Solling and the Weserbergland, makes it an ideal starting point for exciting day trips.
