Former paper mill
Former paper mill
A special feature of the former paper mill was its own millrace, which was diverted from the Unstrut and fed back into the mill. The mill was first mentioned as an ironworks around 1450. In 1586, the former fulling mill was destroyed by flooding, which even tore away the Ammer bridge. In 1602, the mill was rebuilt and put to a variety of uses as a grinding, polishing, leather rolling, brick, oil, timber and washing mill. In 1829, an uncle of Johann August Röbling converted the mill into a paper mill. In 1851, the mill was converted into a spinning mill. A steam boiler was installed in 1865. Numerous floods of the Unstrut river, sometimes also the slipping of the embankment and fires characterize the further history of the mill. A turbine is installed in 1924. In 1970, the mill was nationalized and became part of VEB Textilwerke Mühlhausen. The building was demolished in 2002/2003 and rebuilt as a care facility in 2011.
