Former residence Walter Gropius
For five years, the founder and first director of the State Bauhaus, Walter Gropius, lived in what is now the Ärztehaus on Steubenstraße. Before that, he lived with his wife Alma Mahler and daughter Manon in the "Hotel Elephant". As director of the art school, the Berlin-born and enterprising architect attracted renowned artists to Weimar: among them Lyonel Feininger, Gunta Stölzl, Paul Klee, Marianne Brandt, Johannes Itten and Wassily Kandinsky. In 1922, his "Monument to the March Fallen" of the Kapp Putsch of 1920 was unveiled in Weimar's main cemetery. Legendary is also the director's room of the Bauhaus University Weimar, designed and furnished by Gropius.
