It is mentioned for the first time already in 1700. Nothing is known about the exact age of the sinkhole. The Träbeser Loch is a geological natural monument of nationwide importance and was already protected by law on 30.10.1940.

The Träbeser Loch is located directly on the main hiking trail West-East 3 not far from the Stepfershausen district of Träbes. Due to leaching in salt and gypsum in the underground, cavities formed which broke through to the earth's surface. A huge sinkhole with a diameter of about 80 meters was formed in the lower Muschelkalk. The Träbes hole is 27 meters deep.

The sinkhole is partly overgrown with strong trees up to the bottom. The boundary walls partly show lower shell limestone in the form of marl limestones. The Träbeser Loch also plays a role in the legends of southern Thuringia. According to legend, a rich widow in Seeba was annoyed by her two greedy sons before she died. Both wanted to own the meadow at Seeb. Therefore she wished that after her death the water-filled Träbeser Loch should run out and flood the meadow. After her night of death, the Träbeser Loch was indeed empty and the meadow turned into a pond, the Seeb.
