Cainspring and Melchior Fountain sinkholes
Cainspring and Melchior Fountain sinkholes
The Kainspring or Kainsprung and the Melchiorbrunnen are karst springs. The spring area southwest of Oberdorla feeds the Wilden Graben and flows via the Seebach into the Unstrut. The spring area has a significant importance for the drinking water supply of the region. Karst and speleologists are interested in these deep springs. The springs are located at a depth of 12 and 23 meters, respectively, and the water has a temperature of 9-10 degrees. The Cain legend, which gives the spring its name, is as follows: two boys were playing with their marbles. When one of the marbles disappears in a hole in the ground, the boy, whose name is Cain, pushes the boulder aside and a jet of water shoots towards him. The other boy shouted to him: Cain jump, otherwise you will drown.
