Liebenrode earthfall lakes
Liebenrode earthfall lakes
Not far from the certified quality hiking trail Karstwanderweg is a somewhat hidden karst phenomenon: near the village of Liebenrode, a district of the municipality of Hohenstein, there are several sinkhole lakes, including the Röstesee, Mönchsee, Opfersee, Wiedertäuferloch and Grubenloch. Hikers and walkers can discover these geological phenomena via narrow paths and bridges. In the southern Harz karst landscape, underground leaching of the gypsum rocks creates cavities that can collapse and lead to sinkholes. Such sinkholes have also formed near Liebenrode and filled with water. Guests can enjoy peace and relaxation here with a view of the water. On the supra-regional karst hiking trail, hikers can experience many other karst phenomena in this special region.
