Between the Frauentor near Goethe's residence and the widow's residence of Duchess Anna Amalia, the so-called Esplanade ran along today's Schillerstrasse: a public promenade where good society liked to show off the latest fashions and meet for a sociable stroll. An avenue-like planting of linden trees led between the two city gates past a fountain, a fish pond, trellises and lawns. Today, the redesigned lively pedestrian zone is home to numerous shopping opportunities, Schiller's residence with the Schiller Museum, and the Gänsemännchenbrunnen fountain.
