The "narrowest house" in Mühlhausen is located at Steinweg 78 and is just 4.25 meters wide. There are 70 steps from the cellar to the roof. The house has a remarkable half-timbered façade.

The house was built in the 17th century and rebuilt in 1906. For many decades, it was used by hat makers as a business premises. The building was extensively renovated in 2000 and has been home to "Die Goldschmiede" since 2006 - a manufactory that preserves and continues the old craft tradition of jewelry making.
