Lenten cloths in the church of St. Laurentius in Schönau
After Ash Wednesday, the altars in Schönau church are covered with the three Lenten cloths, which were long thought to be lost and were rediscovered by chance in the church attic more than ten years ago. The purpose of covering the altars in the pre-Easter period is to renounce the glamor of everyday life and remember the story of Jesus' Passion.
The cloths, which are over five meters long and around two meters wide and depict the scene of the Mount of Olives, the Crucifixion and the Descent from the Cross, impress every visitor to the church.
However, the cloths had to be professionally restored so that they could be displayed in the church again.
After much persuasion on the part of the church wardens at the time, the parish committees then commissioned the restoration. It was planned and carried out in close cooperation with the State Office for the Preservation of Historical Monuments and the diocese. However, this was only possible thanks to the generous donations of many citizens and other donors.
This year too, the Lenten cloths can be admired every day between Ash Wednesday and Easter.
