Bad Liebenstein Rock Theater
Bad Liebenstein Rock Theater
The rock theater is a bryozoan reef consisting of dolomitic limestone from the lower Zechstein. The current inner courtyard, also known as the theater space, in which three stately beech trees stand, was created in the 16th century by the collapse of a cave ceiling (sinkhole) from a fissure cave. Around 1860, it was extended by the Meiningen ducal family to become a theater square and was used to stage plays by the Meiningen court theater. The rock theater between high rock faces in the solitude of the old beech forest is of great scenic charm. Two stone staircases lead up and down to the open space. Over the decades, these had fallen into disrepair and were no longer safe to walk on. In the fall of 2002, the lower steps were dismantled and completely rebuilt with railings. The embankment was designed as a stone wall and the upper steps were thoroughly repaired. The rock theater is a natural monument with valuable plant and animal communities.
