Föritztal (municipality)

The municipality of Föritztal with its districts of Eichitz, Föritz, Gefell, Heinersdorf, Heubisch, Jagdshof, Judenbach, Lindenberg, Mogger, Mönchsberg, Mupperg, Neuenbau, Neuhaus-Schierschnitz, Oerlsdorf, Rotheul, Rottmar, Schwärzdorf, Sichelreuth and Weidhausen is located to the south of the district town of Sonneberg in the Thuringian Forest. The municipal area stretches from the southern slopes of the Thuringian Forest to the Bavarian state border and covers an area of almost 100 km². Around 8800 inhabitants appreciate the rural idyll and the central location in the strong southern Thuringian-Franconian economic and living area. Our municipality is named after the Föritz, a tributary of the Steinach.

As part of the planned municipal reform in the Free State of Thuringia, the municipality of Föritztal was created on July 6, 2018 through the voluntary merger of the former municipalities of Föritz, Neuhaus-Schierschnitz and Judenbach. The aim of the territorial reform was to ensure that there would be no independent municipalities with fewer than 6,000 inhabitants in future. After several years and many discussions, citizens' forums and meetings, it was decided that the three municipalities of Föritz, Neuhaus-Schierschnitz and Judenbach would merge and become the municipality of Föritztal.

The municipality of Föritztal has a very well-developed infrastructure with large commercial and industrial settlements. In the industrial areas of Neuhaus-Schierschnitz, Sonneberg-Föritz and Rohof, as well as the districts of Rottmar, Mupperg and Judenbach, there are large industrial properties that make the municipality a strong and interesting business location.
