Frankenhain

UNESCO Biosphere Reserve Thuringian Forest

The state recognized resort Frankenhain is now a district of the rural municipality of Geratal in Thuringia. It lies in a sheltered basin about 480 meters above sea level. The forest stretches right up to the edge of the municipality, the climate is pleasantly mild, the oxygen-rich air has a beneficial effect and the Ensebach stream, which supplies the village with clear water, rises from the 712-metre-high Eisenberg.

Thanks to its location in the Thuringian Forest, Frankenhain is an ideal starting point for aExtensive hikes. From 1691 to 1702, the main section of the raft trench. Its 23 km long course can be hiked amidst idyllic nature. The rafting ditch is tangent to the Lütschetalsperre dam with camping facilities. On the other side of the village is the Ohrdrufer Platte, a flat area that is ideal for relaxed cycling tours, for example.

Another attraction in Frankenhain is the St. Leonhard village church. It was built between 1719 and 1722 and later enlarged in 1907 with a sacristy extension to the east, which is not quite as high as the nave. The church tower and nave are slate-roofed. The interior is characterized by ceiling paintings by the Gotha court painter Johann Heinrich Ritter. The church is lit by sunlight through tall and rather narrow windows.

Visiting cultural and historical cities such as Gotha, Arnstadt, Ilmenau, Weimar, Erfurt and the Suhl/Oberhof region is easy thanks to the convenient transport links.
