Prince Karl Günther Monument
Prince Karl Günther Monument
The Prince Karl Günther Monument stands at the top of the Long Hill. It was erected in honor of Karl-Günther zu Schwarzburg-Sondershausen, who was the last prince of the Sondershausen line of the Schwarzburg dynasty and a passionate hunter. 3 years before his death in 1909, he was seriously injured in a hunting accident.
It was built between 1911 and 1912 as a „Thuringian State Monument“.
The monument is the result of an initiative by the Dowager Princess Marie, who donated the 3-metre-high statue of her husband, created according to a design by sculptor Arno Zauche. The monumental base was built according to plans by Gotha architect Richard Klepzig using natural stone from the Lange Berg. The bronze statue of Prince Karl-Günther shows the father of the state as a hunter on the prowl with his hat and rifle slung over his shoulder.
