Princely Greizer Park
Princely Greizer Park
Originating from a baroque orangery garden, the Fürstlich Greizer Park, located in the valley of the Weiße Elster below the Upper Palace, was designed as a landscape garden from 1800. Carl Eduard Petzold and the Greiz court gardener Rudolph Reinecken, who designed the area around the palace as a pleasure ground with numerous flowerbeds, gave the park its present form after 1873. The highlight of the artistic concept is the rush pond, which takes up almost a third of the park area. The varied design of the banks with inlets and outlets and the addition of islands created an exciting scenery. The park is around 45 hectares in size - but appears much more spacious thanks to the clever incorporation of the surrounding landscape, the deep, backdrop-like staggering of the plantings and the layout of the paths. It is not only important because of the quality of its garden design, it is also the last major princely park to be created in Thuringia and thus marks the end of princely garden design.
