The municipality of Gaberndorf is closely connected to the cultural city of Weimar and is conveniently located for the state capital of Erfurt. The district lies to the west of Weimar. To the north, the municipality is bordered by the Ettersberg with the adjoining local recreation area and the Buchenwald memorial, to the west by the municipality of Daasdorf am Berge and to the south by the municipality of Tröbsdorf. A large part of the district is used for agriculture. The name of the municipality first appeared in a document from 1291. Gaberndorf was incorporated in 1994.
