Memorial in Leubengrund

During the Second World War, Leubengrund was one of several camps in which forced laborers were housed. They had to work in the nearby underground armaments production facility REIMAHG (Reichsmarschall Hermann Göring) in Walpersberg. The Me262 aircraft was to be built underground here. Thousands of people died or were killed during the work on and in the bunker system and due to the poor living conditions.

After a memorial directly on Walpersberg was no longer accessible due to the use of the mountain as a military camp by the NVA, a memorial was erected in Leubengrund in 1974. Every year, ceremonies are held at this site to commemorate the forced laborers, most of whom were deported from Italy, Belgium, Poland and other nations.

An exhibition in the town museum in Kahla and the documentation center in Großeutersdorf commemorate the forced laborers, the production of the Me-262 at Walpersberg and its military use.
