Gotha
Gotha
The residential city of Gotha offers impressive experience areas with the historic city center, the Margarethenkirche and the Augustinian monastery as well as with the KunstForum and the zoo. The "Baroque Universe Gotha" is a cultural attraction with Friedenstein Castle and the Ducal Museum.
The court of Gotha was once frequented by intellectual giants such as Voltaire and Goethe and world-renowned statesmen such as Emperor Napoleon and Prussian King Frederick the Great. Tradition and modernity meet at every turn in the former capital of the Duchy of Saxe-Gotha. There is plenty to discover - for example the casemates of Friedenstein Castle which once surrounded the castle. The casemates are one of the strongest baroque fortifications in Central Germany and most of them have been preserved. During guided tours you can discover the chambers, galleries, backwaters and much more.
From Gotha to the fairy-tale Thuringian Forest, you will travel on one of Germany's oldest intercity streetcars, the Thüringerwaldbahn. The approximately one-hour journey takes you past numerous sights. The final stop is the idyllic resort town of Bad Tabarz at the foot of the 916-meter-high Inselsberg mountain.
