Gräfenroda

Gräfenroda is a friendly village nestled in the valley of the Wilde Gera. The first documentary mention as Grevenrot can be traced back to a clearing of count forest areas and dates back to the year 1290.The village with about 3750 inhabitants has a length extension of 5 km in southwest-northeast direction to the district Dörrberg. Its central location on the northern edge of the Thuringian Forest, about 10 km from the ridges and highest mountains of Thuringia, its charming wooded surroundings, make Gräfenroda an interesting vacation resort.Idyllic paths invite you to unforgettable hikes in the mountains and dense forest areas. The craft of making garden gnomes has its cradle in Gräfenroda, also glassblowing art is traditionally continued and further developed.Among the sights of the village are the St.Laurentius church built in 1731 with its winged altar dating from the 16th century, the memorial stone of the forester Winter, the half-timbered house of the hereditary forester Gundermann built in 1685, the ruins of Alte Burg or Raubschloss called, the forester's grave of the forester Brückner, the Flössgraben as a technical monument with the burnt out stone, the Bärenstein and the valley bridge Wilde Gera, Germany's largest highway bridge. Cozy inns with Thuringian specialties and home-style cooking are waiting for your visit!
