Border tower memorial
Border tower memorial
The border tower on the former inner-German border was used by the GDR border troops to monitor the border fortifications and has been preserved at its original location. An exhibition describes in text and pictures not only the installations and how they functioned in the so-called command tower, but also life in the border area and the construction of the border fortifications. The exhibition as well as the former guard tower are looked after by the Wendehausen local history association.
As a memorial, the tower is also intended to serve as an information point for younger generations about the SED dictatorship and life in the GDR. The tower can be reached from Wendehausen (2.5 km), from Katharinenberg (2.3 km) and from the Grenzblick service area on the B249 (1.75 km). If you choose the route from Drei-Kreis-Eck, on the country road between Wendehausen and Heldra (5 km), you can also visit the Agentenschleuse lock on the way. Enjoy the view from the "Mahnmal Grenzturm" in a beautiful landscape. On a clear day, you can see as far as the Inselsberg and far over the Hainich. A visit to the Reasons for band is worthwhile.
