The village on the left bank of the Werra is almost completely surrounded by the state of Hesse and was particularly hard hit by the GDR regime due to the narrow protective strip of the inner-German border. The beautiful ensemble of monastery buildings and St. Bonifatius Church as well as many large half-timbered houses characterize the village.

The settlement of Burslohon probably existed long before the 9th century (first mention), followed by the first monastery and church in the 10th century. In addition to farming, the inhabitants were involved in weaving and the mining of white abrasive sand for a long time. When the inner-German border was erected, Großburschla lost all contact with its Hessian neighbors and suffered severe reprisals, including forced resettlement, at the hands of the GDR regime. Today, the half-timbered village has a population of around 955 and maintains the traditions of choral singing and funfairs.
