Grub

Grub was first mentioned in a document in 1317, which does not rule out the possibility that individual groups of settlers may have lived in the area much earlier. Mound graves on the Sandberg, which were opened between 1889 and 1892 and where some sling balls and bronze objects were found, suggest this. The name is derived from the Old High German Gruoba and the Middle High German Gruobe and means valley basin, valley depression.

Grub is therefore the village in the pit and lies in a pit-shaped valley that is characteristic of the steep south-western slope of the Schneeberg-Donnersberg range. The charming surroundings invite visitors to enjoy relaxing hikes.

Popular excursion destinations are the Mining lodge "Lange Bahn", the fieldstone (557 m above sea level) and the Osterburg. Hikers interested in geology will come across a number of special features in the Grub district, such as the shell limestone plateau of the Werra, the red sandstone of the Schneeberg area and the Zechstein plateau of the Wachhügel.

Most of the residential and farm buildings were built in the Henneberg-Franconian half-timbered style and still characterize the townscape today. The small church, which stands on a hill in the middle of the village, was built between 1732 and 1736.

Cultural life is very important in this small community. Events, festivals and celebrations take place in the former school or in the Spartenheim and are organized by the fire department association, gardening club or the municipality.
