With the revival of winter sports clubs at the beginning of the 20th century, ski jumping facilities were also built in the Zella and Mehlis meadows. Over the course of time, various ski jumping hills were built, of which the Pionierschanze in Pfaffental and the ski jumping facilities on Regenberg were used for the longest time. In 1976-1980, the town built the youth ski jump at Stachelsrain as a central ski jumping facility in cooperation with companies and the winter sports club SC-Motor Zella-Mehlis. After the fall of communism, a general overhaul followed in 1998-1999, and in 2009-2011 the federal government, state and town rebuilt the ski jumping facility to meet modern requirements.
