The small Harz mountain village Sophienhof belongs to the district Ilfeld of the municipality Harztor and is idyllically located on a meadow plateau at an altitude of about 550 meters surrounded by dense forests. Sophienhof can also be reached by the historic steam locomotive of the Harzer Schmalspurbahnen. The excellent quality hiking trail Südharzer Dampflok Steig, which leads via Ilfeld and Neustadt/Harz to Nordhausen, begins at the stop. Cyclists can explore the meadows and forests, for example, via the routes of the Harzer Mountainbike Arena. The forest settlement has been documented since the 16th century. The name Sophienhof appeared for the first time in 1717, which probably goes back to the Countess Sophie Charlotte zu Stolberg. The Sophienhofers had been allowed to brew and serve beer since 1709. Today, the Hotel Brauner Hirsch continues this historical tradition by tapping its home-brewed beer fresh in the restaurant. Incidentally, Sophienhof is home to more goats than people - the goat pasture is one of the largest outdoor facilities of its kind in Thuringia. The family-run farm offers handmade products such as aromatic cheese and goat milk ice cream. The idyllic mountain village is the ideal vacation spot for families, active nature lovers and relaxing days.
