Weimar main station is located at the northern end of Weimar's city center. The station was built in 1846 as part of the railroad line coming from Halle an der Saale. One year later, the line was extended towards Erfurt. This was followed by connections to Jena, Bad Berka, Kranichfeld and Naumburg. Between 1914 and 1922, the prestigious neoclassical-style station building was built. From 1943, prisoners were transported to Buchenwald concentration camp. Today, the station is mainly used for regional traffic, with long-distance connections running mainly via the station in Erfurt. The Weimar Railway Museum is located to the east of the station.
